Knowing how to help.

Participant listening during a mental health first aid training session in Kelowna, seated in a small group with soft natural light.

Mental health concerns are not always visible, and people experiencing them do not always ask for help. Knowing what to look for and how to respond can make a difference in whether someone gets support.

Mental Health First Aid teaches a practical framework: how to recognize signs of mental health concerns, how to approach someone, what to say, and how to connect them with professional resources. The course covers mood disorders, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use. It does not train participants to diagnose or treat, but to provide initial support until professional help is available.

The John Howard Society of Okanagan & Kootenay delivers Mental Health First Aid training in Kelowna. The course is facilitated by a trainer certified through the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
