The John Howard Society of Okanagan & Kootenay offers evidence-based training programs in suicide intervention and mental health first aid. These workshops are open to professionals and community members who want practical skills for responding to crises.

Most people are not taught how to respond when someone is in crisis. These workshops provide specific skills that can be used immediately.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

  Two-day workshop for anyone who wants to learn suicide intervention skills.

Learn to provide immediate safety for someone at risk.

Develop and implement a suicide safety plan.

Practice intervention skills through simulation.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

  Training for adults who want to respond to mental health crises.

Recognize signs of mental health concerns.

Learn intervention techniques for crisis situations.

Recieve certification from Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Training services are open to:

ASIST

Anyone 16+. Not recommended for people who have had a recent suicide loss.

MHFA

Adults 18+.

No. Both ASIST and Mental Health First Aid are designed for anyone who wants to be prepared to help.

ASIST is $285 plus Eventbrite processing fee. Mental Health First Aid is $214.33. Both include course materials and certification.

ASIST runs over two consecutive days in person. Mental Health First Aid includes 3-4 hours of online programming plus 8 hours of in-person training.

Yes. ASIST provides certification from LivingWorks. Mental Health First Aid provides certification from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
