Justice, Housing, and Community Support Across the Okanagan & Kootenay.

Working Together for Safe, Healthy, andInclusive Communities.

For more than 60 years, the John Howard Society of Okanagan and Kootenay has walked alongside people facing real challenges. We help individuals find stability through housing, justice services, education, community inclusion, and connection. Our work is rooted in a simple belief. When people have support, dignity, and a place to belong, entire communities grow stronger.

Our History

John Howard (1726-1790) inspired the creation of social service agencies in several countries.

For more than six decades, JHS Okanagan and Kootenay has supported individuals navigating housing, justice, and community barriers. What began as a small local effort has grown into a regional network built on compassion, respect, and community partnership.

Today, we continue that work with the same belief that guided our beginning. People can grow. Communities can change. And when we support each other, everyone moves forward.

Our Core Values

Our values reflect the heart of our organization. They guide how we make decisions, how we support people, and how we strengthen community connections across our region.

Accountability

We hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve and to our community. Leadership means listening, planning wisely, and responding to challenges with clarity and compassion.

Adaptability

We design programs that respond to real needs in our community. Our programs evolve so they can meet people where they are and help them take their next steps with confidence.

Collaboration

We believe real change starts with trust, open conversations, and strong relationships. Collaboration is at the centre of everything we do. When people feel heard and respected, they feel safe enough to grow.

Empowerment

We invest in learning, mentorship, and professional development because growth strengthens both our team and the people they serve.

Respect

We uphold the dignity and self-worth of every individual. We believe in their ability to build skills, find stability, and reconnect with community.

Innovation

Innovation helps us offer practical, relevant support that creates safer, healthier pathways for individuals and families.

Board of Directors

The John Howard Society of Okanagan and Kootenay is shaped by people who believe deeply in community. Our Board brings experience from health, education, government, construction, and social justice. They help us stay grounded in our mission, plan responsibly, and ensure our work reflects the needs of our region.

Leadership

Our leadership team brings experience from housing, mental health, justice, community development, and social service fields. More importantly, they bring compassion, local knowledge, and a belief that every person deserves dignity and a fair chance to move forward.

How We Work

Transparency builds trust, and trust strengthens community. We keep these resources open because annual reports highlight our programs, outcomes, and financial stewardship, showing how our work supports people across the region.

Join a Team That Makes Community Stronger

Joining our staff team means working with people who care deeply about community. Our workplace is warm, collaborative, and grounded in respect. Staff come from many backgrounds and bring their own strengths to the work.

A Community That Cares

Our approach is grounded in relationships. We partner closely with individuals, Indigenous communities, service providers, government, and local organizations to build solutions that fit.

We value collaboration over hierarchy, learning over perfection, and compassion over judgment. Strong communities grow when people work together, so we work with intention and humility.
